Dr. Maria Andreou completed her PhD at the Department of English Language and Literature, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Her doctoral research was conducted in the field of Psycholinguistics and was funded by the research project “Thalis: Bilingualism and Bilingual Education.” Following the completion of her doctoral studies, she continued her research activity at the Department of English at the University of Cologne, Germany, where she worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Collaborative Research Centre (SFB) project “Prominence in Language.” During this period, she also published the monograph Language and Cognitive Aspects of Child Bilingualism: Research Observations and Classroom Applications (Peter Lang). Her research focuses on language and communication disorders in monolingual and bilingual children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). She was awarded a postdoctoral excellence scholarship by the Greek State Scholarships Foundation (IKY) for her postdoctoral research project entitled “Linguistic and Cognitive Clinical Markers of Developmental Language Disorder in Greek Adolescents.” She has participated in more than ten funded research projects in Greece and abroad. More recently, she received a research grant from the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (H.F.R.I.) for a project investigating the relationship between language, Theory of Mind, and Executive Functions in monolingual and bilingual high-functioning autistic children (2023–2025). She also serves as Principal Investigator of the research project “Spotting the differences in the Pragmatic language profiles of children with Autism and Developmental Language Disorder” funded by the State Scholarships Foundation (IKY) in collaboration with the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) for the period 2025–2027. Her research findings have been published extensively in international peer-reviewed journals, edited volumes, and conference proceedings (i10-index: 31; Google Scholar citations: 1,538).
